Chivalry is not dead

of the occasion.

One man had a special way of saying Happy Anniversary to his wife of forty six years on Friday October 26th.
While Pat Cranford was sitting in the weekly “Meeting Place” in Froyle Village Hall, enjoying coffee and delicious homemade cake, her husband, Roy, was getting himself dressed up as a Knight and mounting a splendid horse in order to plight his troth to his fair Lady.
Roy had liaised with Annette Booth, who, with her husband, Chris, has run "The Meeting Place" for the past twenty two years, so that no-one, especially Pat, knew about the secret.
So, when Chris dragged Roy and his friend David Bennett away from their coffee and cake to “help move something heavy”, Pat was none the wiser. David, of course, was in on the surprise and had brought a Knight’s tunic, boots, cape and headgear to the storage container in the Village Hall car park. There, Roy changed and then mounted a truly magnificent Champion Irish Draught Horse called Castlerock. Standing some 17 hands high, he is owned by Mrs Susan Hill, who kept a very tight hold on the lead reins.
Once Roy had safely mounted his steed, the signal was given to Annette to invite everyone outside. Pat was as surprised as all the other residents, who had left their coffee and cake and braved the pouring rain, to see a mounted Knight being led into the car park. Indeed, it wasn’t until someone said “Oh Pat, your very own Knight!” that she actually realised it was her own husband. But there was no doubt when he knelt before her with a bouquet of red roses and proclaimed his everlasting love. “It was the most romantic thing he has ever done”, she said. It certainly spiced up this particular Friday morning in Lower Froyle!
