Who was Nellie Smith?
A page from Nellie Smith's exercise book
Nellie Smith was a pupil at Froyle School at the turn of the century who lived in Lower Froyle near the village pond, possibly in one of Highway Cottages. Her father, William, was a carter and she had two sisters and two brothers (1901 Census). She was 13 years old in May 1905 and the above is a page from the exercise book she used in that same year. The original was lent to the School Exhibition in 1986 by Mrs. D. King of Farnham, Surrey. Letter writing was a feature of English teaching in those days.
The picture is a Froyle School photograph from about 1901, and somewhere on the picture is - Nellie Smith. Frustratingly we don’t know where!
