Sorry that should have been the Anchor not the Angel. James was a farm labourer and the last census entry for him lists him as blind and living at the Anchor. His son (another James) went on to become a groom at a house in Bentley/Binsted and appeared to drop the "th" from Smeeth to become James Smee. Ironically I live in Kent where we have a village called Smeeth and also where my parents lived in Allington, Maidstone there is a close named Froyle Close! Twilight time. Happy to hear from any other Smeeth/Smee family.

I have managed to trace my Father's family back to Froyle (James Smeeth) and have found your archive section very useful. Apparently James ended his days at the Angel - will drop in there when I am in the area.

Quite sad that Treloar's is being sold. Wonder what will become of it now? I moved south when my late dad George Douglas got a job at the college and enjoyed growing up in the village. Whenever I visit now to go to the churchyard I can't help but think that there's just no life in it anymore which is a shame.

I was at Farnborough Grammar School, between 1953 and 1958, with Dick Stroud who lived in Froyle. On leaving school I went straight into the RAF and then emigrated to Australia so lost touch with Dick. Does anyone know where he is now? I can't believe that he still lives in Froyle but I would like to catch up with him before we reach our dotage. Thanks

Thanks for this excellent resource for family history researchers!! I am visiting Froyle tomorrow with two other descendants of Mary Ann Mills, whose father Charles Mills was a butcher in Lower Froyle and ran The Anchor. We're really looking forward to seeing the village.
