Builder's Marks

On Christmas Eve 2009 I was invited to take a look at the timber framed garage (below) that Graham Menzies was building for a client in Lower Froyle. What was particularly interesting was that Graham was using the old techniques to construct a modern building.
All joints are wooden pegged as can be seen from the closeups, which also reveal that the whole structure was made in ‘kit form’ and then assembled on site using the marks to identify what fitted where. Graham, a superb local craftsman, has been on several courses on the craft of timber frame construction at the Weald & Downland Museum, at Singleton, near Chichester.

The photographs below show the completed building. It is very gratifying to see the old traditions carried on in the 21st Century.
