The picture shows the Village Pond around 1912.
If you ‘click’ on various areas (the ‘bridge’, Husseys and Pond Cottage) you will bring up a window with an enlargement of the area - click on
the picture to close the window. At the beginning of April 2002 Eddie Hatcher was working at Pond Cottage sorting out the drainpipes from the roof guttering. He uncovered the old culvert - nowadays a new culvert slightly nearer Husseys carries the runoff from the pond under the houses and away - and rang us so we could get these pictures (thanks Eddie!). |

The picture on the left shows the area (just
to the right of the shovel) where the culvert was uncovered. The two
closer pictures show the actual channel running under the houses (left) and, looking back towards the pond (right), where the original
culvert has been blocked off with concrete. The arch at the pond’s edge can be faintly seen in the bank of the pond - the bank is wider than it originally was. The picture on the right was taken in the 1950s when the cottage was being restored. |

The channel is brick lined and not very wide considering the amount of water that must have runoff from the pond. The concrete covering (right hand picture) most likely originates from when the road was made up - our 1912 pictures show it as a track. People who lived in Pond Cottage in the 1930s don’t remember a pond at all - you may have noticed the picture of it as a field! Could it be that this ‘bridge’ is where “Bridge House” (on the right) got its name from? |
