The Brownjohns
The Brownjohn name first appears in the Froyle Church Registers in 1729 recording the burial of one Henry Brownjohn.
The Census shows that, in 1841, Ann Brownjohn was a grocer at Lower Street in Lower Froyle at the shop that would remain in the family for over 100 years. Her husband, John, had died two years earlier in 1839, but her son Thomas (born in 1838) carried on the business until his death in 1892 when his son Walter took over and ran the business until just after the Second World War. Walter Brownjohn was also Clerk of the Froyle Parish Council from its inception in 1894 until 1946. These pictures come from the album of Harold Brownjohn - he was the one in the middle on the roof in the bottom picture.
