Its parish contains 826 souls and 3618 acres of land, including the
village of LOWER FROYLE, more than a mile N.E. of the Church, and
several scattered farm houses etc. There are hop yards on all the
farms. FROYLE HOUSE, a neat mansion with pleasant grounds, is the
seat of Henry Burningham, Esq.; and HIGHWAY HOUSE, another handsome
mansion, is the seat of Mrs. Watkins; but the Rev. Sir Thomas Combe
Miller, Bart., is lord of the manor, owner of a great part of the
parish, and patron and incumbent of the vicarage, which is valued
in K.B. at £11 12s. 1½. and now at £254. He is
seated at FROYLE PLACE, a neat mansion in a finely wooded park, adjoining
the grounds of the before named mansions. He is the fifth baronet
of his family. The first baronet was M.P. for Chichester in 1688 and
1690, and was created a baronet in 1705. The second and third baronets
also represented Chichester in parliament. The present baronet was
born in 1803, and his son and heir, Charles Hayes Miller, Esq., in
1829. The CHURCH (St. Mary) is a neat structure, in the early English
style, with a tower and six bells. It was restored in 1842, by the
present patron and incumbent. The Vicarage House is occupied by the
curate. in Domesday Book, Froli is noticed as being in “Neatham
Hundred”, and as belonging to the Abbess of St. Mary s, Winchester.
Here is a small National School, and the parish sends three boys
to
Holybourne Free School. There are Post Offices at Upper and Lower
Froyle. Letters via Alton.
