FROYLE PLACE ESTATE 1904-1936

November 26th 1904 Charles Goodyear, Leonard Etherington dug 1500 holes at Hamwood. For some reason Mr Goodyear received 2/6 per 100, which Mr Etherington received 2/3. 
1904/5 Some 4,000 Larix Leptplepis, 4,000 Ash and 700 Scotch Fir were planted in an area covering about 2 acres at a cost of £12.0.6 for labour
1905/6 Another 4,000 Ash and 4,000 Larix Europens, along with 100 Spruce and 100 Austriacia.
December 1904 Carpenter at this time was Frank Robinson – paid 4/- a day for carrying out such jobs as mending manure shed.
Richard Stent was a bricklayer. He was paid 3/6 per day, carrying out such jobas repairing at Home Farm.
Also Robert Knight and A.(Alfred?)Kemp working for the Estate at this time.

January 1905 Richard Stent repairing Munday’s Cottage (possibly Farm Bailiff – he was in the 1911 Census)
He was also assisting Glazier and cementing windows at Froyle Church.

July 13th 1917 Paid Israel Shearing (Froyle Sweep on Invoice) for sweeping chimney at Combefield Cottage 6s.0d. A great deal of work seems to have been carried out on Combefield during 1918.

July 5th 1919 through to March 6th 1920 – J. Ezzard is only man mentioned. He appears to be working for 39 hours a week @ 1/- an hour, bringing in £1.19.0 a week, and appearing to do every job under the sun!

March 1920 We see C.Goodyear, T.Robinson, F.Stent and Joyce working. Could they have been away at war?

March 1st – March 10th 1933 C.Bridger  35/- per week, D (Donald) Pritchard  15/- per week caretaking.      Thompson was the Head Keeper on £2 a week with a weekly dog allowance of 2/6d. With him was Childs on 35/- a week, also with the same dog allowance.

March 31st 1934 Henry Pritchard caretaking Froyle Place.
This suggests the house was empty at this time. The Ledger has little else in it until…
December 29th 1934 Mrs Stratton, Mrs Blanchard, Mrs Pritchard & Mrs Pithers set about cleaning the house, with cleaning materials, value 14/-, from T.Brownjohn. Polishing, cleaning baths, W.C’s, wash basins, fireplaces, cupboards, drawers etc. and scrubbing generally. 36 hours at 1/- an hour!!

May 1st 1935 James Baker cutting back hedgerow overhanging Westbrook’s field known as “Hatch”.
July 11th 1935 A.C.Morris, blacksmith 6/-.
October 12th 1935 W.Poore 52 hours cutting up timber at Bambras Lane & Hen & Chick Lane 9p an hour.
