The Anchor in the 1940s

The Anchor 2008

The left hand picture was taken somewhen in the 1940s - the right hand picture was taken in 2008. While the building dates back to somewhere around the 14th century we have very little information about it, let alone any pictures before the ‘old’ one here. “The Anchor” was totally refurbished between 2006 and 2008, despite suffering a fire in the process, and reopened in early 2008. While the basic scene is little different, there are a few changes:-
  • The white barn is now a restaurant and an extension has been added to the right.
  • The ground floor has been rendered.
  • The high voltage power line was built somewhen in the 1960s.
  • The pond in the foreground in the old picture was filled in by the 1960s, but has been restored in a smaller form.
  • Whilst not visible in either picture, the area to the right of the white barn (extension in the 2008 picture) was one of the some twenty ponds in the village that fell into disuse over the years. However, during very wet winters it returns with a vengeance! (See Ponds)
