1 Holmwood Cottages

1 Holmwood Cottage 2008

These two pictures show the changing face of 1 Holmwood Cottages. The old picture was taken in 1915 as part of the sale brochure for the Froyle House Estate. The modern one was taken in February 2008.

Obvious changes have taken place over the years:-

  • The thatched roof has been replaced by tiles.
  • An additional chimney has been added at the left.
  • The windows have been changed.
Once again, the most remarkable thing is that there is really very little difference between the two photographs, taken at opposite ends of the Century. It was impossible to achieve an identical viewpoint for the modern picture as there is now a large (and prickly!) hedge between the field where the 1915 picture was taken from and the road. As a result my viewpoint is a little (about 6 feet) lower than that used in 1915.

The cottage was Grade 2 Listed in May 1985. English Heritage gives the following information:-

No.1 Holmwood Cottages. GV II Small house. C18, and early C19. Brick walls and tiled roof. Timber-framed structure, refaced; front (south-west) of 2 storeys, 2 windows.
