Search Hints

There are one or two things to be aware of when looking for your family connections.

  • Remember that the Census returns only record a name if that person was actually at the house on that specific night. In other words you have a 1 in 3650 chance of finding the name!
  • As in all records there can be errors in interpretation and transcription. We have photocopies of the Censuses so we can check back - if we can read the writing.
  • It was not so important in olden times to have just one name. Aliases were quite common, and you will find in Froyle that there were many different spellings of the same name. This may have been due to the Hampshire dialect.
  • Our Church Records only contain details of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials - NOT Births or Deaths.
  • Baptisms could take place many years after a childs birth.
  • There was also a flourishing Methodist movement in Froyle, so do check that your family was not Methodist.
  • The same applies to Quakers.
  • The ‘Heads of Family and their link to the Church Records are condensed for speed of access. If you cant find a name there, try the full Census or the full Church Records.
  • If you are looking for photographs, try both the “Then & Now”, the Upper & Lower Froyle maps and “Photographs from the Archive”.
  • Another good source for information is the Memories section. This has articles and reminiscences about life in Froyle for over 100 years.
  • Please feel free to e-mail us. We have a lot of other documents and we can also ask some of the local residents for what they can remember!
