Turnpike Cottages
Turnpike Cottages
Turnpike Cottages are situated on the old A31 (now a sliproad) to the West of the “Hen & Chicken” public house. The map below, dated 1879, shows their location. The land between them and the pub is now a filling station.
Turnpike Cottages location
They were built in the late 18th century and may well have been called “Turnpike Road Cottages” as the main road was ‘turnpiked’ in 1753. The name “Turnpike Cottages” doesn’t appear in the Census until 1891. It was once thought that they may have been the stables for the “Hen & Chicken”, but it is much more likely that the building behind the pub was the original stables.
