Frederick Binfield was born in Lower Froyle in 1889, the son of Alfred and Martha Binfield, and brother of Andrew. In 1914 he was living in Aldershot, where, on 17th August, he enlisted with the 48th Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, as 26446 Gunner Frederick Binfield. At the time of his death, he was serving in Italy with the 315 Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery Regiment, as 26446 Sergeant Frederick Binfield. Frederick was killed in action on 23rd August 1917, aged 28 years. We believe he lost his life during the 11th Battle of the Isonzo. Losses were great in Italy, where shell fire in the rocky terrain caused 70% more casualties per rounds expended than on the soft ground in Belgium and France. He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. Sergeant Frederick Binfield is laid to rest in the Ravenna War Cemetery, Italy, Grave 1.H.24. |
