More Shops in Lower Froyle

Highway Cottages & Bridge House

The view on the left looks towards the pond at Husseys Lane, which is on the right behind the house with the large chimney. This house is known today as “Bridge House”, but, when the picture was taken earlier this century, “Bridge House” was a grocers shop, with the entrance in the wall facing the road.
Porch Cottage

Chapel Cottages, nearest the camera, were the home of James Lunn and, in the 1861 Census, were referred to as “The Lower Froyle Street Grocers Shop”. At the time of the Census Ann Brownjohn was at the other Grocers & Bakers - her grandsons who are in our other picture have yet to be born.
The Butcher's  Shop

Just down the road from the previous picture, was Mr.Vivian’s Butchers Shop. This picture was taken much later than the others - in the 1930s. Mr.Vivian started his business in Mr.Holland’s house - where Mrs.Holland would later have her sweetshop. There had previously been a butcher and dairyman in Upper Froyle, next to the Post Office
